Nala’s story
I decided I wanted to be more serious about competitively showing a Xolo. We had owned 2 by this point and one had outsized and the other was just not nice enough to continue to show. I began to learn more about the breed standard. Sought out some mentors. I attended the 2023 National showing my crazy little miniature and learned what I liked and what I did not like in a potential show dog.
In December of 2023 I decided to just go for it and imported Nala from Mexico. She had many of the same dogs in her pedigree that Tolo had. I was specifically looking for the same beauty and temperament that endeared him to all of our family and friends. I had been following Nala’s breeder on social media for a couple years and had dreamed of getting a dog from her.
Nala came to the USA at 8 weeks of age in January of 2024. By 7 months of age, she had earned 12 of her 15 required AKC Points towards her Championship including one major.
Nala is a natural and we have gotten many compliments about her. Best of all, she is very social and warms up to new people quickly. That is not characteristic of the breed as a whole, but a quality we prefer. Her sire is also said to be a very friendly Xolo.
Her first show weekend out she received an Owner Handler Group 4 at only 6 months of age. She continued the year doing well and maturing in herself as we progressed. We both grew a lot in 2024. I have never shown my own dog this much myself before. All of her points, but one 3-point major was acquired as Owner Handled. Nala is not always easy to show and gets bored in the ring. Especially the group rings, but she has caused me to grow so much and has forced me out of my comfort zones continually. I am very proud to have her, and she is one of my heart dogs.
Fall 2024 – This girl just keeps surprising us! On Sept 21st, 2024, at the Xoloitzcuintli of America National Dog Show Nala took Reserve WB. The entry was big enough it awarded her the last major win she needed and last required points for her AKC Championship at only 10 months old!
The following weekend she went on to go Best of Breed both days receiving a 4pt and 5pt major towards her Grand Championship. We also were awarded a NOHS Non-Sporting Group 1. We had our first experience in the NOHS Best in Show Ring. She had the opportunity to do a FastCat fun run, and she LOVED it, so that is another title we plan to pursue with her in the future. (They have to be over a year old to compete in it).
At our last show of 2024 Nala rocked it… securing ALL of her requirements and ending our show season only 2 points shy of acquiring her AKC Grand Championship! WOW!!! What a year!!!
Nala has the best temperament. She is truly a wonderful example of the breed. We look forward to many more adventures together.
The 2025 show year for us began in April – Such an amazing first weekend back at the shows! Nala picked up her Grand Championship, 2-Best of Breeds, both 5 point major wins and a Regular Group 2 at the Progressive Dog Show.
She started the 2025 show season with more maturity and focus than I could have imagined! I decided to see what we could do in 2025 together.
We tried some FastCat and this girl was on fire! She received 4 qualifying runs, including a time that tied with fastest female Xolo for 2025 so far at 27.75 mph! I am looking forward to seeing what she can accomplish in the performance ring this year too!
She continued in 2025 for many Best of Breed wins and more NOHS group placements
She went on to our biggest show weekend on record in Traverse City (our hometown) and received an Owner Handler Best in Show! 2 NOHS group wins and two Regular group wins! She acquired the qualifications that weekend for her BCAT title, and her NOHS GCH Bronze.
